Breakout size chart

Four charts, 86 rows: 69 Insulcore-LV from 2 to 7 core, nine GAB and four GCB at 3 core, four GCEB at 2 and 4 core.

Which chart, before which row

Core count picks the chart before any dimension is read. Insulcore-LV runs 2 core to 7 core. GAB and GCB are catalogued at 3 core only. GCEB is catalogued at 2 and 4 core only. A 5-core cable above 3.3 kV therefore has no row on any of these four charts.

Every row then sizes two things at once, and both have to pass. The D figures are read against the cable over its sheath. The d figures are read against one core just past the crutch. A code whose body fits and whose legs do not is the wrong code.

The three heat-shrink charts and the cold-shrink chart are not read the same way. LV, GAB and GCB print a supplied figure and a recovered figure, and the cable sits between them. GCEB prints an application range against each diameter instead, so there the cable falls inside a printed band.

No chart here carries a conductor area column. A cable described only as 4 core 150 mm² does not select a code. The two diameters do.

All dimensions are in millimetres. Figures below come from the manufacturer's datasheets rather than its product pages, because the sheets carry issue dates and the pages do not. The two sources disagree in a few places, each named under the table it falls in.

The legend, as the sheets print it

D and d
The low-voltage, non-tracking and semi-conductive sheets all print one line: D, d : Internal Diameter. D is measured across the body, d across a single leg.
s and f
s : as supplied ; f : after free recovery. In the diameter columns s is a minimum and f a maximum, so the pair brackets the working band from opposite ends. Every dimension here is quoted supplied first, recovered second.
Tb and Tc
Tb, Tc : Thickness of body & core. The low-voltage and semi-conductive sheets qualify both as ±10%. The non-tracking sheet prints +10%.
L and l
Body length and leg length. Read these as nominal. The qualifier under the recovered column is not the same on every issue of the low-voltage sheet, while the diameter columns match across all of them.
d1, d2, Tc1 and Tc2
Only on the second low-voltage chart. Two leg diameters and two leg wall thicknesses in place of one of each. The three sources letter those columns differently: ds and d2 on the March 2025 sheet, d1 and d2 on the earlier one, Tc and Tc1 on the product page.
Application Range
GCEB only. In place of a recovered maximum the cold-shrink chart prints the diameter band each size is published for, as Ø17 – Ø30 and so on.
Body and finger
The cold-shrink sheet redefines the same two letters: D : Body Diameter | d : Finger Diameter. So d there names the finger rather than an internal diameter, and the sheet does not say which surface it is taken over.
The asterisk
* New sizes, printed under the chart on the low-voltage and non-tracking sheets. Fifteen low-voltage codes carry one. No GAB code does, although the note is printed there too.

Sixty-five codes, from the March 2025 issue of the manufacturer's low-voltage selection chart. Across all 69 low-voltage rows that sheet differs from the manufacturer's product page in exactly two places. It prints LV3GBB-2154 A where the page prints LV3GBB-2145 A, and it gives LV5GBB-0832 A as 100 → 33 mm where the page gives 85 → 37 mm. Both differences are set out at cable breakouts.

This second chart exists because these four crutches do not have legs of one size. It adds a second leg diameter, a second leg length and a second leg wall thickness, so a cable whose cores differ can be sized on a single row. LV2GBB-61820 is the clearest case: one leg is published at 44 → 18 mm and the other at 25 → 6 mm. Counted with the 65 above, these four make the 69.

GAB is the non-tracking family, catalogued at 3 core for PVC and PILC to 36 kV. GCB is semi-conductive, catalogued for belted PILC, where it seals the crutch and screens each core. Figures follow the two datasheets, which differ from the product pages on two GCB rows. GCB-1330 has a core thickness of 3.3 mm on the sheet and 3.7 mm on the page. GCB-2755 reads 68 → 29 mm on the sheet, with Tb 3.5 and Tc 3.9, against 70 → 28 mm with Tb 4.6 and Tc 3.4 on the page. GCB-2145 N carries a supplied body length of 247 mm against a recovered 215 mm. That is the only row in the set where the pair runs the other way, and both sources print it alike.

Two 2-core sizes and two 4-core sizes, and nothing between or beyond them. No 3, 5, 6 or 7-core cold-shrink breakout appears on this chart, so a 3-core crutch that cannot take a flame is not served here. The operating temperature is published as two different figures on the manufacturer's two pages for this part, and both are printed at cold shrink breakouts.

Sizing a row on both ends at once

This is a reading of the published charts, not a procedure the manufacturer publishes. Where a datasheet or a packed installation instruction says otherwise, that document governs.

  1. The body diameter, over the sheath

    The first figure is the cable's outside diameter where the body will sit, just back from the crutch. It is taken on the cable in front of you rather than off the drawing, because armour and bedding move it.

  2. One core diameter, past the crutch

    The second is the outside diameter of a single core just past the crutch, over its own insulation. Where the cores are not all one size, both the largest and the smallest matter, and the second chart exists for that case.

  3. The supplied figures are the clearance

    Ds and ds are minimums. They are what the part has to pass over on its way into position, so both measured diameters sit under them. On a made-off cable the widest thing it travels across is not always the crutch.

  4. The recovered figures are the grip

    Df and df are maximums, taken in free recovery with nothing inside the part. Both measured diameters have to sit above them. Otherwise the part reaches its own limit before it touches the cable, and nothing is gripped.

  5. LV3GBB-1330, worked through

    Body 80 → 30 mm, legs 36 → 13 mm. That row suits a 3-core cable under 80 mm over the sheath and over 30 mm at the crutch, whose cores each measure under 36 mm and over 13 mm. A cable at 62 mm with 22 mm cores sits inside both bands. The same cable with 12 mm cores does not, because the legs would reach free recovery before they touched.

  6. Length is checked last, and loosely

    Ls and ls say how far the part reaches along the cable and along each core. Where a gland, a lug or a clamp sits close behind the crutch, that figure decides whether the part fits the space rather than the cable.

If no row fits

Custom dimensions are published as available on request, and so are flame-retardant low-voltage breakouts. Both are worth naming in an enquiry, alongside the two diameters measured and the core count. A 5-core cable above 3.3 kV, and any 3-core crutch that cannot take a flame, are the two gaps these charts do not close.
